A number of people have asked me if there was a private message system inside the new web site, and I had been saying no.

Well I was checking on some updates for the site and realised that there has been a private message system within the forum module all the time, it is just well hidden. I have now enabled it.

To be able to use it you need to opt in. To do this
  • Login
  • Go to the forum section
  • On the row of buttons above the list of forums, you should see a down point arrow button for the 'Inbox'.Select this, if you don't see this button see below
  • At the bottom of the screen you should see a Private Message section with an inbox, outbox and New message option
  • You can send a message to anyone who has private messaging enable (again see below), at present me, Richard Leake and a test account. To address a message to someone you just need to know there site login ID (which you can get from a forum post, or try to guess and the page will try to fill in for you as you type e.g. typing r shows Richards and my account)
  • After this it is just like posting on the forum or an email
  • I think that if you have any private messages when you go to the forum page the inbox button icon will flash red, but I am unsure of this
IF YOU DON’T see the inbox or private message buttons or sections, you need to enable private messaging
  • On the row of buttons above the list of forums select the ‘My settings' the one with a cog
  • Select this, then forum settings, then edit settings and make sure ‘enable private messages’ then press the update at the bottom of the page
  • You then get the private message options

Hope this is useful, PM me if you have problems

Richard

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong - but PM facility only seems to recognise the first 20 people alphabetically. So I can't get anyone after the letter k!

Is there a setting I need change, my computer literacy is somewhat limited. But I did try sending you a message and it did appear to just ignore me.

Regards (from an IT simpleton I suspect)

David

Sorry don't know the answer to that one, I seem to be able to get lists of people if I try the first letter of their user name in the PM address box e.g r gets my rfennell account.

The other option I have just noticed is that you can press the PM button (next t where you press reply) and send I message to the person who wrote a post

You only see the PM button if the person as messaging enabled
